Episode 90: Grocery Update: USDA and EU Farm to Fork Policy

The Checkout does a deep dive on E.U.’s expansive Farm To Fork framework and where the USDA has gone wrong in their approach to food systems. This one’s for you, Secretary Vilsack.

Can you imagine the U.S. mandating an increase in organic farming acreage while making binding commitments to reduce herbicide and pesticide use, while curbing fossil fuel-based fertilizers? What if our food system was redesigned with the climate in mind? Can you envision a continent-wide interest in agroecology, local foods and social justice in the food system? What if farmers who pocketed public subsidies were legally compelled to use sustainable and regenerative methods? What if our elected officials did not kowtow to big seed and chemical monopolies? What would our food system priorities be? Maybe the E.U. is onto something here.
